What Is Fertility Preservation and Why Should You Consider It?

Posted .

Fertility preservation is essentially freezing eggs, freezing embryos and cryopreserving sperm for future use.  Individuals who have been diagnosed with cancer may undergo treatments that potentially compromise fertility. Freezing eggs or sperm allows that person an opportunity down the road to use their own gametes for reproduction. If the person has a life partner, freezing embryos gives them an even better chance of conceiving at a later date. Some couples are not at a point in their lives where they feel ready to have children, but are concerned about the ticking of the biological clock. Fertility preservation allows couples to extend their period of fertility until the time is right for children.

As a woman ages, her fertility declines over time. Her egg reserve lowers and the quality of the eggs become compromised. Egg freezing was considered experimental just 5 years ago but is now a mainstream  option allowing a woman to start her family when she is mentally and emotionally ready rather than  just when biologically ideal.

Embryos that are viable but not transferred during the completion of an in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle will also be frozen and can be used in future frozen embryo transfers. Some couples are able to have more than one pregnancy and child as a result of one IVF cycle.
